Safe Communities Coalition kicks off Click It or Ticket enforcement campaign in Wyandot County

UPPER SANDUSKY, Ohio — The Wyandot County Safe Communities Coalition urges the community to get in the habit of buckling up for every trip ahead of a national Click It or Ticket seat belt safety campaign. The national high-visibility seat belt enforcement effort, which coincides with the Memorial Day holiday, runs May 18-31, 2026.

University of Akron data indicates that Wyandot County currently has a 98.9% seat belt utilization rate. While most Wyandot Countians already choose to buckle up for every trip, the Click It or Ticket campaign is a reminder that seat belt use is the law.

“Everyone is reminded that a wearing a safety belt is the single most effective way to prevent injury or death in a crash,” Ohio State Highway Patrol Bucyrus Post Commander Lt. Ty Skaggs said. “A seat belt can be the difference between a minor injury and a fatal outcome. Buckle up. Every trip. Every time.”

During the Click It or Ticket campaign, participating law enforcement agencies will be taking a no-excuses approach to seat belt enforcement. One of the focuses of the Click It or Ticket seat belt high-visibility campaign is nighttime enforcement. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration data shows a higher number (around 56%) of unrestrained passenger vehicle occupant fatalities happen at night. Seat belt use rates also vary by gender. According to nationwide traffic fatality statistics from 2023, around 53% of male fatalities and 41% of female fatalities were unrestrained.

In celebration of the Click It or Ticket campaign, the Wyandot County Safe Communities Coalition is hosting a kickoff event at 3 p.m., Thursday, May 14, 2026, at the Upper Sandusky Community Library. The event is open to the public and will feature a showcase of Upper Sandusky High School student-made PSA videos. The winners of the Click It or Ticket PSA contest will be announced at this event with awards sponsored by Tracy Shriver Insurance Agency State Farm and by Sunshine Insurance Agency. Lt. Skaggs will serve as a guest speaker at this event.

“Whether you’re sharing a fun, student-made video or a simple spoken reminder before pulling out of the driveway, encourage friends and family to buckle up.” Wyandot County Safe Communities Coordinator Callan McMillion said. “There’s no excuse. Seat belts save lives no matter your age, where you’re sitting in the vehicle or length of the trip.”
