Wyandot County Public Health receives $27,500 in traffic safety grant

Federal funds from Ohio Traffic Safety Office help save lives in Wyandot County

UPPER SANDUSKY, Ohio — The Wyandot County Board of Health recently announced that the Ohio Department of Public Safety’s (ODPS) Ohio Traffic Safety Office (OTSO) awarded $27,500 in federal traffic safety funding to Wyandot County Public Health for federal fiscal year 2027.

“Partnerships are critical to the success of any health and safety effort, and we are committed to working with local traffic safety partners to address concerns in Wyandot County,” Wyandot County Safe Communities Coordinator Callan McMillion said.

Wyandot County Public Health has identified that unsafe driving practices, such as impaired and distracted driving, speeding, and not using a seat belt, are impacting the safety and welfare of the citizens of Wyandot County. To save lives and improve the quality of life for citizens, Wyandot County Public Health will use the grant funds to support quarterly traffic fatality reviews with traffic safety partners and to conduct community traffic safety outreach through participation in local events and annual campaigns shared with local media and through Wyandot County Public Health’s social media presence.

The funds are passed through OTSO from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to support the efforts of safety partners statewide and focus on traffic safety priority areas such as restraint use, impaired driving, motorcycle safety, older drivers, and youthful drivers.

Competitive grant proposals are accepted and reviewed by OTSO. The competitive grant process solicited grant proposals from state agencies, non-profit organizations, colleges, universities, hospitals, political subdivisions, and other interested groups within selected Ohio counties and jurisdictions (based upon the number of fatal crashes).

Wyandot County Public Health is nationally accredited through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Established in 2007, PHAB is the non-profit organization that administers the national accreditation program, which aims to advance and transform public health practice by championing performance improvement, strong infrastructure, and innovation.
