Wyandot: Work together to end drunk driving

UPPER SANDUSKY, Ohio — From Aug. 15 through Sept. 1, the Wyandot County Safe Communities Coalition will be working alongside local law enforcement for the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over high-visibility enforcement campaign. The goal is to deter impaired driving and prevent the tragedies seen during previous Labor Day weekends nationwide from happening on Wyandot County roadways.

Since the beginning of 2020, alcohol impaired crashes have made up around three percent of all traffic crashes occurring in Wyandot County but represent 24% of traffic fatalities on Wyandot County roadways and 13% of all serious injury traffic crashes.

“We want our community members to understand that it’s our first priority to keep people safe, so we’re asking everyone to plan ahead if they know they’ll be out drinking,” said Wyandot County Sheriff Todd Frey. “The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is an awareness effort to get the message out that drunk driving is illegal and it kills. Let’s make this a partnership between law enforcement and drivers: Help us protect the community and put an end to this dangerous behavior.”

Stay safe during this Labor Day holiday weekend by securing a designated sober driver before drinking. Don’t wait until after drinking to plan how to get somewhere, as impairment clouds a person’s judgment. When plans change, call a sober friend or family member to provide a safe ride home. When a friend has been drinking and is considering driving, be proactive — take away the keys and help arrange for a sober ride. Report drunk drivers to local law enforcement.
