Wyandot traffic fatalities down in 2022

The Wyandot County Safe Communities Coalition and local law enforcement agencies are happy to report the number of fatal traffic crashes in the county was more than halved in 2022 when compared to 2021 numbers. There were three total traffic fatalities on Wyandot County roads in 2022.

On average in the last 10 years, 3.4 traffic fatalities have occurred on Wyandot County roadways each year. In the last 10 years, 2019 was the year with the most fatalities at eight total. The lowest number of traffic fatalities was reported in 2013, with just one fatality recorded.

Through continued education, outreach, and enforcement efforts, the Wyandot County Safe Communities Coalition and local law enforcement agencies hope to set a record and report zero traffic fatalities in 2023. To do this, the coalition needs the help of everyone who lives, works, and plays in Wyandot County.

Sometimes crashes cannot be avoided, but there are many ways to reduce the risk of fatalities:

  • Always wear a seatbelt, no matter the seating location in the vehicle or the type and size of the vehicle. Wearing a seat belt reduces the risk of a fatal injury by 45%.
  • Never get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol or using impairing substances, including legally prescribed medicines. Your family and the families of others on the roadways depend on you to make safe driving choices so everyone can get home safely.
  • Follow posted speed limits and traffic safety signs, including stop and yield signs at intersections. Locally, several crashes have occurred at intersections. No matter if it’s day or night, on a country road or in town, drive defensively and maintain the habit of stopping and yielding when appropriate.

Remember to be safe, be smart, and be alert as you travel the roadways this winter. For more information on traffic safety, visit WyandotHealth.com or follow @WyandotHealth on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, TikTok and YouTube.
