Wyandot County Traffic Fatalities Update

The Wyandot County Safe Community Coalition reported that there was one fatal traffic accident on Wyandot County roadways in June.

This is the first Wyandot County traffic fatality this year. During the same six-month period of last year, there were no fatalities reported in the county, and only one recorded traffic death during all of 2013.

According to a May 2014 National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) study of the comprehensive costs associated with traffic fatalities, up to $1.4 million dollars can be attributed to each traffic related death, not including lost quality of life.   The NHTSA calculates the dollar value by factoring productivity losses, property damage, medical and rehabilitation costs, congestion costs, legal and court costs, emergency services, insurance administration costs, and the costs to employers. When considering the lost quality of life, the total comprehensive cost of each fatality can be as high as 9 million dollars.

The Wyandot County Safe Communities Coalition and local law enforcement agencies wants to remind the public it only takes a second to become a statistic. Be safe, be smart, and be alert as you travel the roadways this summer.

Wyandot County Public Health is nationally accredited through the Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB). Established in 2007, PHAB is the non-profit organization that administers the national accreditation program, which aims to advance and transform public health practice by championing performance improvement, strong infrastructure, and innovation.
