Lead Prevention Week

Lead poisoning is preventable, yet nearly half a million children living in the U.S. have elevated lead levels that can cause significant health problems. Major sources of lead include: lead-based paint and lead-contaminated dust in deteriorating homes and buildings. Lead can also be present in drinking water, soil and from work exposure. There are 3 simple things caregivers can do to reduce a child's exposure to lead.

  • Test your home.  Ask for a lead inspection before purchasing an older home.
  • Test your child.  Ask your healthcare provider for information on how and where you can test your child.
  • Test your knowledge.  Get the facts from your local health department or call 1-800-424-LEAD

National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is October 20-26.  Take some time during this week to educate yourself on the harmful aspects of lead to ensure your children are not at risk.
